Julian Werner
Hill
(1904 - 1996)

developed nylon

Julian Hill was born in St. Louis, Missouri on 4 September 1904. After gaining his PhD in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology he joined DuPont research laboratories in 1928.

Whilst working in the department headed by Wallace Carothers he researched the program which led to the discovery of a process for making nylon fibres. As an employee, Hill did not have any patent rights to his discovery and his name did not even appear on the patent application which was made in 1937.

He retired from DuPont in 1964 and died in Hockessin, Delaware on 28 January 1996 at the age of 91.
